NEET asks 180 questions. They do not come out of the syllabus evenly — a handful of chapters turn up in every single paper, and some turn up once in five years. We counted all 960 questions from the last five NEET papers, chapter by chapter, so you can see exactly where the marks are before you decide what to study next.

960 questions counted, one by one
5 papers: 2022 to 2026
81 chapters in the current syllabus
42/90 Biology questions from just 10 chapters
Read this first. NTA does not publish chapter-wise weightage. Nobody has an official table. What follows is a count of what actually appeared in past papers, done question by question. It tells you where to put your revision hours. It cannot tell you what is in your paper.

How we counted

One paper per year, five years, every printed question given one main chapter. Mixed questions are counted once, under the chapter the question is really testing.

Year Paper used Physics Chemistry Biology
2022 Main exam, 17 July 50 50 100
2023 Main exam, 7 May 50 50 100
2024 Main exam, 5 May 50 50 100
2025 Main exam, 4 May 45 45 90
2026 Re-examination, 21 June 45 45 90

The paper changed size in 2025, from 50 questions a subject to 45. Five questions out of 50 is 10 per cent; five out of 45 is 11.1 per cent. So we work out each chapter's share inside its own year first, then average the five years, then convert back into today's 45 / 45 / 90 format. That is why the tables below say things like 2.7 questions a paper — it is what the five-year record works out to in the paper you will actually sit.

For 2026 we use the 21 June re-examination . The cancelled May paper is left out, and so are additional sittings, so no year gets counted twice. Every chapter is also checked against the official NEET (UG) syllabus, so nothing in these tables is a topic that has already been removed.

Biology chapter-wise weightage

Biology is 90 questions and 360 marks — half the paper, and the half you can be most accurate in. 42 of those 90 questions come from just 10 chapters (47 per cent) , which is why Biology is always where a serious plan starts.

Physics chapter-wise weightage

Physics is 45 questions and 180 marks , and it is the subject where no small group of chapters carries the paper. The top 10 give 23 of 45 (50 per cent) — so the remaining 18 chapters are worth about 22 questions, roughly 88 marks. That is the single most common Physics mistake: skipping the small chapters because they look small.

Why weightage is not a promise

This is the part most weightage articles leave out. Here are six chapters across the five papers. Same chapter, very different years.

Molecular Basis of Inheritance Biology
9 7 6 7 2
22 23 24 25 26
Cell: The Unit of Life Biology
2 3 4 5 7
22 23 24 25 26
Coordination Compounds Chemistry
2 2 3 3 6
22 23 24 25 26
Current Electricity Physics
5 5 3 3 1
22 23 24 25 26
Alternating Current Physics
2 4 2 1 1
22 23 24 25 26
Evolution Biology
2 1 4 1 6
22 23 24 25 26

Molecular Basis of Inheritance gave 9, 7, 6 and 7 questions — then 2. Cell: The Unit of Life went the other way, 2 up to 7. Coordination Compounds sat at 2 for two years and then gave 6. Current Electricity fell from 5 to 1.

So what do you do with that? You use weightage to decide the order you study in, never to decide what to skip. A chapter that gave one question last year has given six the year after. Study the heavy chapters first and most, cover everything at least once, and let your test mistakes decide where the extra hours go.

How to turn this into a study plan

1. Biology first, and all of it

At almost any target you have to cover the whole of Biology. It is 360 of 720 marks and there is nowhere else to make them up. A student aiming at 550 typically scores 330 or more in Biology — that is not optional, it is the foundation the rest sits on.

2. Chemistry close behind

Chemistry is 180 marks spread almost evenly across three branches, so there is no “skip Physical” strategy. Organic is best learnt as connected reactions rather than a list, and Coordination Compounds has been the biggest single chapter in recent papers.

3. Physics is the subject you adjust

This is where your target actually changes the plan. If you are aiming at 650, you need almost all of Physics. If you are aiming at 550, you need about 95 of its 180 marks — and covering two-thirds of the chapters properly beats half-reading all 28. Pick the chapters you can be accurate in and own them.

4. Finish your weak chapters before December

Everyone has chapters they quietly avoid. They do not get easier by being left until March, when there is no time to repair them. Whatever you personally find hard — Rotational Motion, Organic conversions, Genetics problems — finish those first, while there is still room to go back over them.

5. Leave a buffer

Plan for 25 marks above your target. A tough question turns up in a chapter you prepared, you misread one, you lose a couple you should have had. A plan built to land exactly on your target leaves nothing for the day going slightly wrong.

Common questions

Does NTA publish official chapter-wise weightage for NEET?

No. NTA publishes the syllabus, not a chapter-wise question quota. Any weightage table you see — including this one — is somebody counting past papers. Use it for planning, not as a guarantee.

Which chapter has the highest weightage in NEET?

Across these five papers, Molecular Basis of Inheritance has the highest five-year average in Biology, Coordination Compounds in Chemistry, and Electrostatic Potential & Capacitance and Current Electricity in Physics. But all four of those swing year to year, which is exactly why you cover the full syllabus.

Is Class 11 or Class 12 more important for NEET?

Both. Class 11 chapters account for roughly half of every subject in these papers, and in Biology the split is almost exactly even. Class 11 is not revision you can postpone — it is half your paper.

Can I skip low-weightage chapters?

In Physics the 12 smallest chapters together are worth about a quarter of the subject — around 45 marks a year. Skipping them is not a saving, it is a decision to hand over 45 marks. Cover everything once; spend the extra hours on the heavy chapters.

Will the NEET 2027 syllabus change?

No syllabus change has been announced at the time of writing. The chapters here are checked against the official NEET (UG) syllabus. Always confirm on neet.nta.nic.in for your own exam year before you drop anything.
